Phones Beep Across India As Centre Tests Disaster Information Alert System

New Delhi: If your phone buzzed on Saturday with an urgent government alert, there was no cause for concern. Millions of mobile users across India received a test message as the Centre officially rolled out its indigenous Cell Broadcast emergency alert system.

The alert, labelled “Extremely Severe Alert,” informed citizens about the activation of a new disaster warning service and clarified that no action was required, as it was only a test.

System Rolled Out Under Centre’s Initiative

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the Cell Broadcast Alert System with support from the National Disaster Management Authority, under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The system is designed to instantly deliver critical alerts during disasters or public safety emergencies without requiring internet access or mobile applications.

SACHET Platform at Core of Initiative

At the heart of the system is SACHET, an integrated alert platform developed by C-DOT and based on the international Common Alerting Protocol.

Officials said the platform is now operational across all 36 states and Union Territories.

    Advanced Alert Technology

The Cell Broadcast system marks a major upgrade over traditional SMS alerts. Unlike regular messages, these alerts override phone settings, triggering a loud alarm and displaying a prominent message—even if devices are on silent or do-not-disturb mode.

This ensures maximum reach and immediate attention during emergencies.

    Wide Use in Disaster Management

Authorities have already used the system extensively, sending over 134 billion SMS alerts in more than 19 Indian languages during natural disasters, weather warnings and cyclonic events.

The system is designed to provide timely warnings during events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, lightning strikes, gas leaks and chemical hazards.

    Ensuring Nationwide Coverage

Once fully operational, the Cell Broadcast system will send alerts to all mobile handsets regardless of user settings, ensuring broad and inclusive reach during emergencies.

Officials said the initiative represents a major step towards strengthening India’s disaster preparedness and public safety infrastructure.
