Pilgrimage Strengthens the Country’s Economy

The country and the world are going through tough times right now. On the one hand, the energy supply has been disrupted due to the US-Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, while on the other hand, the country’s markets are collapsing due to global warming and unusual weather.

In such a situation, the tourism sector is supporting the country’s economy. In this religious country, pilgrimage is the most important in the tourism sector. The arrival of pilgrims from India and abroad for the Shri Amarnath Yatra supports the economic progress of Jammu and Kashmir.

The economic face of the region has changed due to the devotees coming for the pilgrimage to Maa Vaishno Devi Dham. The pilgrimage from Chintpurni to Jwalaji has developed the lower Himachal Pradesh and Kandi region. Uttarakhand, once known for its backwardness due to its inaccessible terrain and unusual weather, has transformed into a modern Uttarakhand. Four-lane roads have replaced the arduous routes.

The Char Dham Yatra is a center of attraction and faith for the world. According to Hindu belief, a pilgrimage to the Char Dham is considered liberating for a successful life. Thus, religious tourism is a major source of regular income and employment for the country. Over the past 25 years, the Char Dham Yatra has significantly contributed to Uttarakhand’s development. The pilgrimage to Badrinath and Kedarnath has recently begun, and the crowds of pilgrims are resonating with the chants of “Chalo Kedar.” In this context, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has stated that the pilgrimage has been made completely safe.

Of course, the dangers have increased recently due to some natural calamities and some human negligence, but it is also true that in the last four years, the number of devotees visiting the Char Dham in Uttarakhand has increased to record levels. Not even a week has passed since the doors of the Char Dham opened, but the number of devotees has reached over 2.5 lakh. It should be noted that this is double the number of last year. Last year, when Uttarakhand faced a natural disaster, it was being said that this might affect the Char Dham Yatra this year.

But no, there is no end to the devotees making the pilgrimage in the country.The Adi Kailash region of Rishikesh Kumaon division, where tourists used to be hesitant to visit, is now attracting devotees. Along with the tourism sector, the hospitality, hotel, and transportation sectors have also expanded significantly in the state. The state’s economy has gained momentum. Chief Minister Dhami also acknowledges that revenue from pilgrimage plays a significant role in Uttarakhand’s development. Statisticians say that tourism and pilgrimage contribute between 27% and 43.7% to the state’s gross domestic product.The Char Dham Yatra alone, comprising Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, generates revenue of Rs7,500 crore annually for the state’s economy.

Despite natural disasters, over 230 million tourists have visited Uttarakhand in the last three years. On April 26th, 55,998 pilgrims arrived for the Char Dham Yatra, and this number is steadily increasing. Between April 23rd and 25th, 37,884 pilgrims arrived at Badrinath Dham alone. The doors of Badrinath opened on April 23rd, while those of Kedarnath opened on April 22nd. So far, 124,782 pilgrims have arrived. These areas are inaccessible, and access roads are being improved, but it is faith that draws pilgrims in large numbers, making religious tourism a significant revenue-generating sector for the country.
