PM Modi to Meet India’s Asian Games 2026 Contingent Today, Athletes to Attend at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to interact with the Indian contingent that participated in the Asian Games 2026 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. The programme is expected to begin around 4:30 p.m., and the Prime Minister will also address the gathering.

The event will be attended by athletes from the Indian contingent, their coaches and support staff, Indian Olympic Association officials, representatives of National Sports Federations, and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

India finished fourth in the medal tally at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, winning 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.

The performance marked India’s second-highest medal haul at the Asian Games, after the record 106 medals won at Hangzhou in 2023. India’s latest results also highlighted its growing competitiveness across several sporting disciplines.

India Records Historic Achievements Across Sports

The Indian contingent registered several notable milestones at the Games, including historic performances in recurve archery. Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold medals in the same edition, while India secured its maiden Asian Games medals in soft tennis and mixed martial arts (MMA).

India also won its first-ever gold medal in the women’s trap event. In weightlifting, the country secured a silver medal after a gap of 28 years, while a silver in Greco-Roman wrestling ended a 64-year wait for an Indian finalist in the discipline.

Athletics contributed 24 medals, the highest tally for India in any sport at the Games, although the discipline yielded just one gold medal.

Archery Delivers Gold Medals and Olympic Quotas

India won nine medals in archery, including five gold medals, matching its record medal haul from the Hangzhou Asian Games.

The country swept all three compound team titles. Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav’s victory in the mixed team event also secured an Olympic quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

India won medals in all five recurve events, marking its best-ever Asian Games campaign in the discipline. Kumkum Mohod claimed gold in the women’s individual event and secured another LA 2028 Olympic quota.

Pranavi Urs Makes History in Golf

Indian golfer Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an individual gold medal in golf at the Asian Games, ending the country’s 24-year wait for a title in the sport.

She later teamed up with Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar to win silver in the women’s team event, marking another first for India.

The Prime Minister’s interaction is expected to recognise the athletes’ performances and achievements at the continental sporting event.
