New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended birthday greetings to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, wishing him a long and healthy life.
Modi shared his message on social media platform X, writing, “Birthday greetings to Punjab Chief Minister Shri Bhagwant Mann Ji. Praying for his long and healthy life.”
Born in 1973 in Satoj village in Punjab’s Sangrur district, Mann initially rose to prominence as a comedian before entering politics. He comes from a family of schoolteachers and graduated in Commerce from Shaheed Udham Singh Government College in 1992.
Mann gained popularity at the age of 18 after releasing an audio cassette. He later became a familiar face through television shows such as Jugnu Kehnda Hai and Jugnu Mast Mast. His popularity grew further after he participated in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star Plus in 2008. He also appeared in the National Award-winning Punjabi film Main Maa Punjab Dee.
From Comedy to Politics
Mann entered politics through the People’s Party of Punjab, founded by Manpreet Singh Badal. He contested his first Assembly election in 2012 from the Lehra constituency in Sangrur district, where he faced former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.
After the People’s Party of Punjab merged with the Congress, Mann joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at the invitation of its national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal.
In 2014, Mann won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, defeating senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader S.S. Dhindsa. He emerged as one of the AAP’s most prominent faces in Punjab ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections.
In 2018, Mann resigned as the party’s Punjab unit president after Kejriwal apologised to Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a defamation case. Mann, who had repeatedly criticised Majithia, was reappointed to the post the following year.
Mann Became Punjab Chief Minister in 2022
Mann retained the Sangrur parliamentary seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, remaining the AAP’s only Member of Parliament from Punjab at the time.
His political career reached a major milestone in 2022 when the AAP won the Punjab Assembly elections. Mann contested from the Dhuri Assembly constituency and won by a margin of more than 58,000 votes.
He took oath as Punjab Chief Minister on March 16, 2022, becoming the leader of the AAP government in the state.
Modi’s birthday greeting on Saturday came as Mann continued in the role of Punjab Chief Minister.
