Udupi (Karnataka): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made a nationwide appeal urging citizens to adopt nine key civic commitments aimed at social responsibility, sustainability, and national development. His address followed his participation in the ‘Laksha Kantha Gita’ recitation at the Udupi Sri Krishna Math in Karnataka’s Udupi district.

Nine Commitments Inspired by the Bhagavad Gita

Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita emphasise duty and responsibility, which are highly relevant in the modern era. Drawing inspiration from these values, he outlined nine commitments that he said are essential for contemporary society and should reach every citizen with the blessings of saints and spiritual leaders.

The first two commitments focus on environmental protection—conserving water and rivers, and planting trees. He highlighted the growing movement of planting a tree in one’s mother’s name and encouraged religious institutions to actively participate to multiply its impact.

Focus on Social Welfare and Self-Reliance

The third commitment, he said, is to take personal responsibility for improving the life of at least one underprivileged person. The fourth emphasises Swadeshi, urging citizens to prioritise locally made products as part of the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening India’s economy, employment, and technological self-reliance.

He further called for promoting the ‘vocal for local’ movement, supporting natural farming practices, and adopting healthier dietary habits by including millets and cutting down on excessive oil consumption.

Yoga, Knowledge Preservation, and Heritage Tourism

As part of the remaining commitments, the Prime Minister urged people to integrate yoga into daily life and contribute to preserving ancient manuscripts, which house vast stores of India’s traditional knowledge. He noted that the Centre is advancing efforts in this direction through the Gyan Bharatam Mission.

The final commitment involves visiting at least 25 heritage sites across India. He cited examples such as the Mahabharat Anubhav Kendra in Kurukshetra and the Madhavpur Mela in Gujarat, associated with the life of Lord Krishna, encouraging citizens from across the country to experience India’s cultural legacy firsthand.

Duty Towards Viksit Bharat by 2047

Reflecting on Lord Krishna’s message of karma, duty, and collective welfare, the Prime Minister said that the year 2047 represents a national responsibility to build a developed India. He underlined that every individual and institution has a role in this journey, with Karnataka playing an important part.

Concluding his address, he spoke of his personal sense of devotion, noting how even a glimpse of Lord Krishna evokes a spiritual bond reminiscent of the devotion of Kanaka Dasa. He reaffirmed that the teachings of Lord Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita remain timeless and relevant for all generations.
