Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended congratulations to Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, calling her elevation to the top post “a shining example of women empowerment.”
He made the remarks while addressing a rally in Imphal during his visit to Manipur.
India-Nepal Ties Highlighted
Modi underlined the close historical and cultural bonds between the two neighbours.
“India and Nepal have been close friends bound by shared history, faith and cultural ties, and New Delhi stood firmly with the people of the neighbouring country during its transitional phase,” he said.
First Woman Prime Minister of Nepal
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in on Friday night as Nepal’s first woman prime minister, taking charge of an interim government.
Her appointment came after political turmoil triggered by a social media ban that forced the resignation of the K P Sharma Oli-led dispensation.
Karki occupying the top post of that country is an example of women’s empowerment, Modi asserted.
Path to Stability Amid Turbulence
Karki was selected after consultations involving Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel, top military officials, and youth protesters who led nationwide demonstrations.
Modi expressed confidence in her leadership, saying, “I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal.”
People’s Resilience Praised
The Prime Minister also lauded the determination of ordinary Nepalis in the face of political turbulence.
“I also want to congratulate the people of Nepal who, despite such turbulent times, have kept democratic values supreme,” he said, noting how citizens, especially the youth, had engaged in cleaning and painting public spaces in recent days.
Commitment to Support Nepal
Reaffirming New Delhi’s solidarity, Modi declared that India and Nepal were “moving forward together” and reiterated that India would continue to back Nepal’s democratic aspirations and quest for stability.
