PM Modi extends greetings on Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu, and Pongal, wishes for “happiness and good health”

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu, and Pongal. Describing these festivals as symbols of India’s rich cultural tradition, he prayed for everyone’s happiness, prosperity, and good health.

Makar Sankranti: Prayer for happiness, prosperity, and health

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, which marks the Sun’s entry into the Capricorn sign, PM Modi said that this auspicious occasion is celebrated with different traditions in different parts of the country.

He wrote on the social media platform X, “This sacred festival is celebrated in different parts of the country according to local customs. I pray to Lord Surya for everyone’s happiness, prosperity, and good health.”

Pongal: A Celebration of Tamil Culture and Connection to Nature

Extending his greetings on the occasion of Pongal, the Prime Minister described it as a celebration of the connection between human labor and nature. He said that the festival honors agriculture, farmers, rural life, and the dignity of labor.

Praising Tamil culture, PM Modi said that India is proud to be the land of Tamil, the world’s oldest language. He also said that Pongal has now become a global festival, celebrated with enthusiasm by the Tamil community worldwide.

In the letter, he said, “Pongal symbolizes the richness of Tamil traditions. It is heartening to see that this festival is being celebrated not only in Tamil Nadu but across India and the world. May this festival bring prosperity, success, and good health to everyone’s lives.”

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to attend the Pongal celebrations held at Union Minister L. Murugan’s residence in Delhi on Wednesday.

Magh Bihu: A festival dedicated to Assamese culture and farmers

PM Modi also extended greetings on the occasion of Magh Bihu, describing it as a festival that reflects the soul of Assamese culture, promoting joy, warmth, and brotherhood.

He said that Magh Bihu is a symbol of contentment and gratitude, marking the end of the harvest season and honoring the contributions of farmers.

In a letter addressed to the people of Assam, the Prime Minister wrote, “This beautiful festival, embodying the best of Assamese culture, is truly a symbol of joy and harmony. It teaches us gratitude and encourages generosity and mutual care. May this Magh Bihu bring peace, good health, happiness, prosperity, and success to everyone’s lives.”

Magh Bihu in Assam, Lohri in Punjab, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Sankranti in North India, and Uttarayan in Gujarat—all these festivals reflect the diversity of harvest festivals in India and strengthen respect for farmers and a sense of community.
