Jind Welcomes India’s First Hydrogen Train as PM Modi Flags Off Green Rail Initiative

Jind: Haryana’s Jind witnessed a historic moment on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking the country’s entry into a select group of nations exploring hydrogen technology for cleaner and sustainable rail transport.

Ahead of the inauguration, the train was decorated with flowers and balloons, while residents gathered in large numbers to celebrate what many described as a landmark achievement for Haryana and Indian Railways.

The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, serving as a pilot project under Indian Railways’ clean energy initiative.

Residents Celebrate Landmark Launch

The launch created a festive atmosphere in Jind, with locals expressing excitement over improved connectivity and the introduction of environmentally friendly rail transport.

One resident said the new train would reduce travel time, improve public convenience and offer affordable fares. The resident also expressed hope that the region would soon receive a medical college.

Another resident called the launch a “historic moment,” saying the introduction of India’s first hydrogen-powered train in Jind would be remembered for years to come.

A third resident suggested that the service should eventually be extended to Panipat, stating that such an expansion would benefit more passengers and further boost regional development.

Hydrogen Train Marks Major Step Towards Green Mobility

The hydrogen-powered train forms part of Indian Railways’ efforts to adopt cleaner and energy-efficient transportation technologies.

The Jind-Sonipat section has been selected as the pilot route for hydrogen train operations. An indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind, while the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the necessary licence for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas.

The project aligns with India’s broader clean energy goals and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

India Joins Countries Exploring Hydrogen Rail Technology

With the launch, India joins a select group of countries, including Germany, Japan, China and the United States, that are developing or testing hydrogen-powered rail systems.

Hydrogen trains are considered an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel-powered locomotives as they emit only water vapour during operation, making them a promising solution for sustainable public transportation.
