PM Modi and Greek counterpart Mitsotakis discuss boosting connectivity through IMEC

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on the sidelines of the AI ​​Impact Summit in New Delhi on Thursday. The two leaders specifically discussed enhancing connectivity through the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

IMEC was announced at the G20 Summit

During the G20 Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi in 2023, the leaders of India, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the United States announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).

The corridor will be developed in two parts

IMEEC will consist of two separate corridors. The Eastern Corridor will connect India with the Gulf countries, while the Northern Corridor will connect the Gulf with Europe. It aims to enhance connectivity, reduce costs, secure supply chains, facilitate trade, and create jobs, leading to greater economic integration between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Review of India-Greece Strategic Partnership

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during the meeting, the two leaders reviewed various aspects of the India-Greece strategic partnership, including trade and commerce, defense and security, tourism, culture, and cooperation in AI and other emerging technologies.

According to the MEA statement, the leaders discussed promoting connectivity through IMEC and expressed hope for the early implementation of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Prime Minister Modi also thanked Mitsotakis for Greece’s support in India’s fight against terrorism.

Mitsotakis’s address at the AI ​​Impact Summit

In his address at the AI ​​Impact Summit, the Greek Prime Minister thanked India for hosting this important event. He said the theme “People, Progress and Planet” reflects that artificial intelligence is not just a technological shift but also a cultural change.

He said decisions made today will determine whether AI expands opportunities or exacerbates inequalities.

Emphasis on AI, Employment, and Public Services

Mitsotakis said governments should ensure workers are retrained, small businesses have access to AI tools, and public services are upgraded. Farmers, nurses, teachers, and small entrepreneurs should truly feel the benefits of this technology.

He explained that digitalization in Greece has made public services more accessible. The use of AI in education will reduce the learning gap, while technologies like telemedicine and predictive analytics are making healthcare more proactive and home-based.

 Emphasis on Global AI Cooperation

Mitsotakis said Greece has partnered with major cloud service providers and is also developing its capabilities through EU-supported AI initiatives.

He warned that if the AI ​​ecosystem is rigidly compartmentalized or overly regulated, collective innovation will be stifled. He said that embracing responsible interdependence will expand opportunities for all.

Concluding his address, he said that the combination of artificial intelligence and ancient wisdom—whether found in Sanskrit texts or the works of Greek philosophers—will pave the way to a just and prosperous future.
