Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a landmark visit to Somnath Temple in Gujarat as part of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrations. The event marks significant milestones in the temple’s history, including 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the shrine and its longstanding role as a symbol of faith and resilience.
On Sunday, the Prime Minister took centre stage in the Shaurya Yatra a ceremonial procession held to honour the warriors who defended the temple in centuries past. The ritual, featuring a grand march, reflects India’s rich civilisational legacy and martial spirit that the celebration aims to highlight.
Mr. Modi offered prayers and performed darshan at the iconic Somnath Temple, one of India’s most revered Jyotirlingas. He also participated in Omkar Mantra chanting and religious rituals, underscoring the spiritual dimension of the festivities.
The event included a special drone show that lit up the night sky with thousands of drones forming depictions of divine symbols and the temple itself — a testament to India’s blend of technology and tradition. Hundreds of devotees and visitors gathered to witness the sight, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv is being observed from January 8 to 11 and is aimed at commemorating both the 1,000th anniversary of the temple’s first attack and the 75th anniversary of its reopening post–Independence. The Prime Minister’s presence underscores the central government’s emphasis on celebrating India’s cultural heritage and spiritual resilience.
Crowds lined the streets of Somnath to welcome the Prime Minister, reflecting the enthusiasm and communal pride surrounding the event. The celebrations are not just religious but have also become a symbol of national unity and collective memory for many across the country.
