PM Modi to Virtually Inaugurate 72nd National Volleyball Tourney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament on January 4, marking a significant moment for Indian sports and promoting volleyball at the national level. The opening ceremony will be held at 12 noon via video conferencing, underscoring the event’s importance and the Centre’s continued focus on expanding the sports culture across the country.

The tournament is scheduled to run from January 4 to January 11 at the Dr Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra, Varanasi, and will witness intense competition among top teams and players.

    Major Participation Across the Country

More than 1,000 players from 73 men’s and women’s teams representing various states and institutional units will participate in the championship, showcasing talent and sportsmanship on a national stage. The large turnout highlights volleyball’s growing popularity and the depth of competitive sport across India.

This edition of the championship also marks the first time that such a prominent national volleyball competition of this scale is being held in the Purvanchal region, a development seen as a major boost to the sports infrastructure and athletic culture in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

    Local Support and Leadership Presence

While the Prime Minister will join the event virtually, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to be physically present at the venue to motivate and interact with the athletes. The presence of state leaders underscores the importance given to sports development and youth engagement at both national and local levels.

Senior officials including the President of the Uttar Pradesh Volleyball Association and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, along with local dignitaries and organizers, have been actively supervising preparations to ensure the championship is a grand success.

    Boost to Regional Sports Identity

Organizers believe this championship will not only enhance the standard of volleyball in the country but also bolster Varanasi’s identity as a sporting hub, complementing its rich cultural heritage. The presence of mascots inspired by local culture, such as ‘Nandu’ and ‘Neera’, will also add a unique regional touch to the tournament’s festivities.

With anti-doping measures and comprehensive logistical arrangements in place, the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament aims to deliver high-quality competition while inspiring young athletes and fans alike.
