The tributes took place at Swahid Smarak Kshetra, a memorial dedicated to the more than 860 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the six-year Assam Movement (1979–1985), which sought to protect the state’s identity and rights against illegal immigration. Modi respectfully offered floral tributes and paid his respects to the brave souls whose courage shaped Assam’s modern political narrative.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who stood alongside the Prime Minister at the memorial, called the moment “emotional” and celebrated the Centre’s recognition of the agitation’s martyrs. Sarma noted that such gestures reinforce the state’s collective memory of the sacrifices made in pursuit of Assam’s dignity and rights.
The Assam Movement was a landmark chapter in the state’s post-Independence history, led by grassroots organisations such as the All-Assam Students’ Union (AASU), to seek action against illegal immigrants and protect Assamese cultural, linguistic, and political identity. The agitation culminated in the 1985 Assam Accord, which outlined measures to safeguard the rights of the indigenous population.
The memorial Swahid Smarak Kshetra stands as a reminder of those tumultuous years and the steadfastness of the Assamese people who participated in the movement. Its inauguration and Modi’s tribute highlight both remembrance and renewed focus on the values that spurred the agitation.
In addition to the homage ceremony in Guwahati, Modi’s two-day visit to Assam includes a series of engagements highlighting developmental initiatives in the state, such as infrastructure projects and community programmes. Earlier, he interacted with students and participated in the national ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ programme aboard a river cruise on the Brahmaputra. India Today+1
