PM Modi to inaugurate redeveloped 524-year-old Mata Tripura Sundari temple tomorrow

Agartala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple, one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas, in southern Tripura’s Udaipur on Monday, officials said.

PM’s Visit Schedule
A senior police official said the Prime Minister will arrive in Agartala on Monday afternoon from Arunachal Pradesh before proceeding to Gomati district headquarters, Udaipur, 65 km away.

“After inaugurating the redeveloped temple and the beautified surroundings, PM Modi will offer puja at the Kali temple. Following the rituals, he will return to Agartala and then leave for Delhi. There will be no public address as per the current schedule,” the official confirmed.

Redevelopment Under PRASHAD Scheme
A senior Tourism Department official said the 524-year-old Tripura Sundari temple has been redeveloped at a cost of over ₹52 crore under the Union Tourism Ministry’s PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme. The Tripura government contributed an additional ₹7 crore.

Built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the country and the third such shrine in eastern India after Kolkata’s Kalighat temple and Guwahati’s Kamakhya temple.

CM Manik Saha’s Invitation and Preparations
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha personally invited PM Modi for the inauguration and has visited the site twice in recent weeks to oversee preparations.

Sharing a video of the redeveloped temple, Saha wrote on X:
“The enchanting nighttime supernatural view of the new infrastructure of Mother’s Abode, built under the Prasad Project! The mesmerizing complex reflects the deep reverence of our government. The people of Tripura eagerly await the grand inauguration by our illustrious Prime Minister.”

Historical and Cultural Significance
The Tripura Sundari temple, a symbol of the state’s cultural and spiritual heritage, has been central to the religious identity of Tripura for centuries. After nearly 517 years of monarchic rule, the erstwhile princely state of Tripura merged with India on October 15, 1949, under an agreement signed by Regent Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi.

Upcoming 51-Shakti Peethas Park
In addition to the redevelopment, replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas are being constructed at an under-construction 51-Shakti Peethas Park in Banduar, Gomati district, just four km from the temple.

Estimated at ₹97.70 crore, the project aims to provide an immersive spiritual tourism experience with replicas of all Shakti Peeth temples, landscaped gardens, museums, accommodation facilities, food courts, and entertainment zones.

Chief Minister Saha laid the foundation stone of the project on July 13 this year.
