Pune: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Pune Metro Line 3 (Man-Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar) via video conferencing on Tuesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Sunetra Ajit Pawar will be the chief guests at the inauguration ceremony of this long-awaited metro project.
The inauguration ceremony will be held at 10:30 am in the badminton hall of the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Mhalunge-Balewadi. Regular passenger services on this new metro corridor will begin at 6 am on November 4, 2026.
The Metro Corridor will be 23.203 kilometers long
Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhuri previously stated that Pune Metro Line 3 is a fully elevated corridor with a total length of 23.203 kilometers. It is also known as the ‘Puneri Metro’ and the ‘Pink Line’.
This metro line will begin at Maan and reach Shivajinagar via the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi. Shivajinagar is a major administrative and commercial hub of Pune.
The total estimated cost of this project, including land acquisition and utility transfer, is ₹8,313 crore. It is being constructed under the DBFOT (Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer) Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model under the Central Government’s ‘National Metro Rail Policy, 2017’.
Facilities will be available at 17 stations in the first phase
A total of 23 stations have been built on this metro line, of which 17 will be open to passengers from November 3. Initially, only one staircase will be operational at seven of these stations.
Multi-modal integration is being implemented to facilitate passengers’ onward journeys after disembarking.
In addition, the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, along with road traffic, has also been prioritized. Separate cycle tracks, wide footpaths, pedestrian crossings, and foot overbridges are being constructed.
According to Dr. Chaudhary, these arrangements will significantly reduce traffic congestion, especially in the Hinjewadi area.
30% of electricity needs will be met through solar energy
Under the project, solar power systems with a total capacity of 7.60 MW have been installed. This includes 6.10 MW at metro stations and 1.50 MW at the car depot.
The resulting green energy will meet approximately 30% of the project’s total electricity needs.
Nearly 100 women pilots will operate metro trains
A unique feature of Pune Metro Line 3 is that all its trains will be operated by approximately 100 women train pilots.
Furthermore, approximately 50% of the total station staff, including station controllers, ticketing staff, and station attendants, will be women.
Dr. Chaudhary said that this initiative reflects a strong commitment to women’s empowerment, gender equality, and increasing women’s participation in modern transportation systems.
