New Delhi: The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is reshaping India’s residential power sector, with over 7.7 lakh households now reporting zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said on Tuesday.
Over 19 lakh solar systems installed nationwide
Launched in February 2024, the scheme has seen 19,45,758 rooftop solar installations across the country, benefiting more than 24.35 lakh households so far, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik told the Rajya Sabha. The programme aims to cover one crore households by FY 2026–27 with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore.
Gujarat leads, financial support boosts uptake
Gujarat has emerged as the top-performing state, with over 4.93 lakh installations benefiting more than 7.10 lakh households, including 3.62 lakh with zero power bills. To encourage wider adoption, the government is offering central financial assistance and collateral-free loans at a concessional 5.75% interest rate, along with special models to support rural and economically weaker households.
