Centre Renames PMO as ‘Seva Teerth’, Raj Bhawan to Be Called ‘Lok Bhawan’

New Delhi: The central government has announced a major administrative and cultural change, in which the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has been renamed “Seva Teerth”. Raj Bhawan across the country will now be called “Lok Bhawan”, and the Central Secretariat will be renamed “Kartavya Bhawan”.

On Tuesday, news agency PTI reported this information, citing government sources. “A major transformation is underway in public institutions. We are moving from power to service. This transformation is not administrative, but cultural.”

Several name changes have been made in the past.

The central government has previously renamed Rajpath as “Kartavya Marg”. In 2016, the Prime Minister’s official residence, 7, Race Course Road, was renamed Lok Kalyan Marg.

Why was the name “Raj Bhavan” changed?

According to the Home Ministry, at the Governors’ Conference last year, the name ‘Raj Bhavan’ was considered to reflect a colonial mentality.

Therefore, the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor will now be called ‘Lok Bhavan’ and ‘Lok Niwas’.

Prime Minister’s Office Shifted from 78-Year-Old South Block

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office is now being shifted from the 78-year-old South Block to the new ‘Advanced Campus – Seva Tirth’.

The change is part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project.

According to sources, on October 14, Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan held a high-level meeting with the service chiefs at Seva Tirath-2.

What will be located at Seva Teerth?

Seva Teerth-1: Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)

Seva Teerth-2: Cabinet Secretariat

Seva Teerth-3: Office of the National Security Advisor (NSA)

What is the Central Vista Project?

The Central Vista Project includes

♦ a new Parliament building,

♦ Central Secretariat,

♦ new residences for the Prime Minister and Vice President,

♦ and redevelopment of the area from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate.

The project was announced in September 2019. Prime Minister Modi laid its foundation stone on December 10, 2020.

The cost of the project is estimated to be ₹20,000 crore.

Home Ministry also shifting from North Block

In September, news broke that the Home Ministry would soon shift from North Block to the Common Central Secretariat (CCS) on Janpath. The process has already begun.

Under the Central Vista project, 10 new ministry buildings and a large convention centre will be built on both sides of the Line of Actual Control. Three of these buildings are almost ready.

After all the ministries are shifted to the new buildings, the North and South Blocks will be converted into the ‘National Museum’ of India.

Around 25,000-30,000 artefacts will be displayed here, making it one of the largest museums in the world.
