Who will be new Police Chief? Punjab government sends DGP panel to UPSC, these names included

The Punjab government will submit the names of 14 IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission early next week. The panel committee of the UPSC will consider these names and prepare a panel of three officers. The state government will appoint one of these officers as the regular DGP.

Names of 14 IPS officers approved by CM 

The Chief Minister has already approved the proposal containing the names of 14 eligible officers, and it will be sent to the UPSC soon. Earlier, on February 5, the Supreme Court had reprimanded several states, including Punjab, for appointing acting DGPs. Following this, the UPSC had sought the proposal from the state within 10 days. After the delay, the commission issued a memorandum.

Names of these officers approved 

The panel includes the names of SS Chauhan, Harpreet Singh, Gaurav Yadav, Kuldeep Singh, Gurpreet Devo, Jatinder Kumar Jain, Shashi Prabha Dwivedi, Naresh Kumar, Ram Singh, SS Srivastava, Parveen Sinha, A.S. Rai, V. Neerja, and Anita Punj.

16 DGP-rank officers

There are currently 16 DGP-rank officers in Punjab. Fourteen of them are eligible for the post. This includes acting DGP Gaurav Yadav, who has been in the post since July 2022. The DGP selected from the panel will serve a minimum term of two years, irrespective of his retirement date. This provision has been implemented under the Supreme Court’s 2006 directions and subsequent UPSC guidelines.
