Chandigarh: BJP’s Punjab state president Sunil Jakhar has strongly opposed the decision of the center to give 10 acres of land to Haryana for a separate assembly in Chandigarh. The Ministry of Environment gave its approval yesterday and ever since then the decision has been termed as betrayal to Punjab and facing criticism from AAP, Congress, and SAD. Now in the list is the BJP state president himself who believes that Chandigarh is not just a geographical area, but is deeply connected to the sentiments of the people of Punjab.

In a post on his X account, Sunil Jakhar expressed his displeasure and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider this decision and personally intervene to get it canceled. He said that the decision could affect the strong relations between Punjab and the Center and could hurt the cultural and religious identity of Punjab.
Apart from opposing the decision to allot land for Haryana assembly, Jakhar also questioned the role of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in it. Jakhar alleged that during the Northern Regional Council meeting held in Jaipur, when Haryana demanded land for a separate assembly in Chandigarh, the Punjab Chief Minister, instead of opposing it, demanded land for the Punjab Assembly as well.
In view of this step, Jakhar called Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann inexperienced and said that his decision has weakened Punjab’s claim on Chandigarh and that the people of the state may suffer due to the anti-Punjab stance of AAP.
Jakhar says that this issue is important for all the parties of Punjab and all the parties have been unanimous on this. He disagreed with the Chief Minister’s stance, calling it a necessary step to protect the interests of Punjab. According to Jakhar, this decision taken in the case of Chandigarh can have a far-reaching effect on the cultural and political situation of Punjab.
