Coimbatore: Five people, including three women, were killed on the spot after the car they were travelling in crashed into the rear of a stationary lorry on the Pollachi-Udumalai National Highway near Nallampalli in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on Sunday, police said.

The victims were travelling from Udumalai to Pollachi when the accident occurred.

Car Crushed After High-Speed Collision

According to preliminary information, the lorry had been parked along the highway while workers were watering roadside plants.

Police said the car was allegedly travelling at high speed when it rammed into the rear of the stationary vehicle.

The impact of the collision was severe, completely crushing the front portion of the car and trapping all five occupants inside. The victims, comprising three women and two men, died at the scene.

Rescue Operation and Investigation Underway

Local residents and passing motorists alerted the police and emergency services immediately after the crash.

Rescue teams reached the spot, recovered the bodies from the mangled vehicle and shifted them to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.

The accident also disrupted traffic on the busy highway until the damaged vehicles were removed.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether overspeeding or the positioning of the stationary lorry contributed to the collision.

Series of Fatal Road Accidents Raise Safety Concerns

The latest tragedy comes amid a series of deadly road accidents reported across Tamil Nadu in recent weeks.

On July 24, six people, including a 15-year-old boy, were killed in two separate accidents in Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts. Earlier, on July 18, three people lost their lives after a car collided with a tanker lorry in Tiruppur district.

On July 13, six people were killed and 41 others were injured in a collision between an omni bus and a government bus on the Tiruchy-Madurai National Highway.

The recurring incidents have once again highlighted concerns over road safety, speeding and the risks posed by stationary vehicles on high-speed highways.
