Priyanka Gandhi Raises Women’s Safety Concerns After Jamui Minor Harassment Case

Wayanad: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday raised concerns over women’s safety while reacting to the alleged molestation and harassment of a minor girl in Bihar’s Jamui district.

Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi described the incident as deeply concerning and said governments at both the state and central levels need to focus on measures that can make women feel safer.

She said that discussions around major government schemes and programmes should also be accompanied by efforts to ensure the safety of women in public spaces.

Her remarks came after a video showing the alleged harassment of two minors in Jamui surfaced on social media, triggering a police investigation and political reactions in Bihar.

Jamui Case Comes Under Police Investigation

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 19 in the Jamui district area when a minor girl and a male classmate were returning after visiting a local hill area. Police said a group of youths allegedly stopped the two teenagers and harassed them.

Videos of the incident subsequently surfaced on social media. Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify those allegedly involved and began taking action after the footage came to light.

The main accused identified by police, Nandan Yadav, was later injured in the leg during a police encounter while being taken to the alleged crime scene, according to officials. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Police have also arrested other accused persons in connection with the case. Reports said around seven people had been identified from the footage, while the investigation and search for other suspects continued.

FIRs Filed Against 120 Social Media Accounts

The circulation of the incident’s video has also triggered a separate police action.

Bihar Police have registered FIRs against operators of 120 social media accounts for allegedly circulating the video or sharing information that could reveal the identity of the minor victim. Police have appealed to people not to share or repost such content, warning that revealing the identity of a minor victim can attract legal action.

The National Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought action from the Bihar authorities.

Political Reactions Follow Jamui Incident

The case has triggered a political debate in Bihar over women’s and children’s safety and the government’s response.

Priyanka Gandhi’s comments came amid reactions from opposition leaders as well as the ruling alliance. The incident has also drawn controversy over remarks by some Bihar leaders describing it as an isolated or minor incident, while opposition figures criticised that characterisation.

The police investigation is continuing, with authorities working to identify and take action against all those allegedly involved in the incident.
