    Problem of Insomnia Among Indians

    Recently, on the occasion of World Sleep Day in India, a survey was conducted involving over 89,000 people. A startling fact emerged: approximately 700 million Indians are unable to get a full night’s sleep.

    A new epidemic of insomnia has taken root in the country. In 2025, 59 percent of the population suffered from insomnia. With improvements in economic conditions, this percentage had dropped somewhat to 46 percent. However, amidst the current atmosphere of conflict, the problem has escalated once again. Consequently, the majority of people are once again falling victim to insomnia. It is a well-established medical fact that adequate sleep is crucial for a healthy body and a healthy mind; yet, India appears to be grappling with a severe crisis of sleep deprivation.

    The underlying causes include irregular daily routines, rising stress levels, and the untimely use of modern electronic gadgets. The survey recently conducted spanned 393 districts between December 2025 and March 2026. The findings revealed that half of the population is getting less than six hours of sleep—a truly shocking statistic. Another surprising revelation is that only 8 percent of people in the country enjoy an uninterrupted sleep of 8 to 10 hours—a state often described as “sleeping like a log.” While 42 percent of people manage to get between 6 and 8 hours of sleep, 23 percent get only 4 to 6 hours, and another 23 percent receive even less than that.
