Puducherry: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Puducherry has the potential to emerge as a major medical tourism hub in India. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth Rs 2,700 crore in the Union Territory.
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said mobility, modern infrastructure and quality healthcare are key pillars of growth. He added that the double-engine NDA government has worked extensively for the welfare of the people.
Focus on infrastructure and mobility
PM Modi said the Centre has laid strong emphasis on urban and rural infrastructure for inclusive development. “Mobility is the key to growth,” he said, highlighting the construction of rural roads to benefit farmers and small businesses.
He also announced projects to reduce congestion in Puducherry town, including a flyover worth Rs 140 crore. Referring to the Union Budget, he said a record Rs 12 lakh crore has been allocated for infrastructure development across the country.
Puducherry has also been included under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme to boost roads, water supply, coastal infrastructure, schools and hospitals.
Push for healthcare and medical tourism
Highlighting healthcare as a top priority, the Prime Minister said it must be accessible, available and affordable. He said no resident of Puducherry should have to travel far for treatment.
Instead, he envisioned Puducherry attracting patients from across India and abroad. “Puducherry can become a medical tourism hub. It already has nine medical colleges,” he said.
He also mentioned water distillation plants for clean drinking water and new sewage treatment facilities to improve waste management and ease of living.
Boost to education and youth empowerment
PM Modi stressed that youth empowerment is central to India’s growth. He announced new infrastructure at National Institute of Technology Karaikal, including the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and modern hostels.
Upgrades at Puducherry University, such as a new lecture hall and girls’ hostel, were also announced.
He welcomed the filling of thousands of government vacancies in Puducherry, noting that direct recruitment exams were held after decades in several departments.
Recalling his vision of “BEST Puducherry” — business, education, spirituality and tourism — he said the Union Territory is progressing steadily with improved per capita income and social progress indicators.
