Pune Building Collapse: 9 Rescued, Several Still Trapped as NDRF Intensifies Search

Pune: Rescue teams have pulled out nine people alive from the debris of a collapsed building in Maharashtra’s Moshi area of Pimpri Chinchwad, while several others are still believed to be trapped, prompting an intensive multi-agency rescue operation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, police, fire brigade and local authorities are carrying out rescue efforts on a war footing.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a large mound of legacy garbage collapsed at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) waste-to-energy plant. The sliding waste struck a nearby administrative building, causing a major portion of the structure to cave in and trapping workers inside. Heavy monsoon rains are believed to have destabilised the garbage mound, contributing to the collapse.

Nine People Rescued, Search for Survivors Continues

According to officials, the NDRF and other rescue agencies have so far rescued nine people alive from the debris. Search operations are continuing using heavy earth-moving machinery, rescue equipment and trained personnel to locate those still trapped beneath the rubble. Toxic gases from the waste site and the unstable condition of the collapsed structure have made rescue operations particularly challenging.

Army Joins NDRF-Led Rescue Effort

A joint rescue team comprising personnel from the Indian Army’s Southern Command, NDRF, Maharashtra Police, Fire Brigade and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has been deployed at the site. Medical teams are also on standby to provide immediate treatment to rescued victims.

Heavy Monsoon Rains Under Scanner

The collapse comes amid an active monsoon spell across Maharashtra, with Pune witnessing exceptionally heavy rainfall in recent days. Continuous rain has led to waterlogging, flooding and landslides in several parts of the state, increasing concerns over the safety of infrastructure and waste disposal sites. Authorities are expected to investigate whether prolonged rainfall and inadequate stabilisation of the garbage mound contributed to the incident.
