CM Bhagwant Mann announces 10,000 new police personnel, gives force free hand against drug smugglers

Phillaur:ย Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday said the state government will recruit 10,000 new police personnel purely on merit, while giving the police a free hand to take strict action against drug smugglers as part of the ongoing ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign.

Addressing Punjab Police officials ranging from the Director General of Police (DGP) to Station House Officers (SHOs) at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Academy in Phillaur, Mann said the government would provide modern facilities to strengthen the force.

Mann said the recruitment of 10,000 personnel would be carried out purely on merit and without political recommendations.

He also said the government was committed to equipping the police force with state-of-the-art facilities and strengthening its ability to tackle drugs and crime.

The Chief Minister said the police had been given a completely free hand to take strict action against smugglers under the state’s anti-drug campaign.

โ€˜Will not stop until drugs are uprootedโ€™

Mann said the government would continue its campaign until the drug menace was eliminated from Punjab.

He appealed for a collective resolve to make Punjab a drug-free state and said the government would not allow families, particularly mothers and sisters, to continue suffering because of drugs.

โ€œLet us pledge that we will neither stop nor bow down until we have uprooted the menace of drugs,โ€ Mann said, reiterating his government’s commitment to creating a drug-free ‘Rangla Punjab’.

The event at the Punjab Police Academy also saw police personnel being honoured for their work in maintaining law and order and taking action against drugs and crime. Recent reports said officers, including SHOs and DSPs, were recognised for their performance during a special programme at the academy.

The Chief Minister’s announcement comes as the Punjab government continues to intensify its anti-drug campaign. In September, Mann had directed officials to step up action against remaining drug hotspots and described the campaign as entering a final phase.
