Jalandhar, Punjab: After six Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab exited the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), internal tensions have intensified within the party. In a bid to prevent further divisions, state in-charge Manish Sisodia has convened a crucial meeting in Jalandhar.

While the gathering is officially described as a meeting with around 1,000 block observers, several MLAs have also reached the venue. Initially planned at the Chief Minister’s residence in the city, the meeting location was later shifted to Shahpur City Campus on the outskirts.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to join the proceedings via video conferencing.

MLAs, Observers Gather; Tight Entry Protocols

As per early inputs, nearly 25 MLAs — including Naresh Kataria, Jeevanjot Kaur, and Inderjit Nijjar — have already arrived. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 12 noon, with observers continuing to reach the campus.

Arrangements have also been made for a group photograph featuring MLAs and observers on the premises.

Security and access at the venue appear to be tightly regulated, with instructions at the entrance stating that only block observers will be allowed entry.

MLAs Downplay Crisis, Call It Routine Election Preparation

Several party leaders who attended the meeting dismissed speculation of any internal rift.

Nakodar MLA Inderjit Kaur Mann said the meeting is part of an ongoing process linked to election preparedness. She noted that observers have spent the past four months surveying constituencies, collecting feedback from local areas, and compiling reports that will now be reviewed.

She added that both MLAs and ministers are participating, and accused the opposition of spreading baseless allegations. According to her, such meetings are routine and reflect the party’s focus on governance and public satisfaction in Punjab.

Sonia Mann Targets Defectors, Rejects Split Claims

AAP leader Sonia Mann also termed the meeting as a normal organisational exercise. She stated that clarity on discussions would emerge only after the session concludes.

Criticising the MPs who left the party, she alleged that they had compromised on their principles and were inclined towards the BJP. She further claimed that some leaders switch sides under pressure, especially when facing legal troubles.

Rejecting rumours of a split among MLAs, she asserted that no such situation exists and hinted at a strong response to opposition narratives.

Sisodia Earlier Denied “Emergency” Nature of Meeting

A day earlier, on April 28, Manish Sisodia had clarified via a post on X that the gathering was solely intended for block observers and dismissed reports suggesting it was an emergency meeting involving MLAs.

However, the presence of multiple legislators at the venue has added political significance to the meeting, as the party navigates a sensitive phase in Punjab.
