Aam Aadmi Party MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanaur assembly seat has got a big relief. Let us tell you that Pathanmajra has been granted bail by the court. He has been granted this bail under section 376. The MLA got relief in a high-profile case involving allegations of rape, fraud, criminal intimidation, and bigamy by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Granting him regular bail, the bench of Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya observed that, considering the facts and circumstances of the case, it would not be appropriate to keep him in custody for an extended period.
According to the information received, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra is currently lodged in Bathinda jail. He can come out of jail on Monday. On the other hand, a post was shared on Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra’s Facebook account in which he expressed gratitude for the trust of the people.
It is worth noting that his second wife, Gurpreet Kaur, had registered this case, and an FIR was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station. Earlier, he was granted bail in the mining case. Pathanmajra has posted on his social media thanking his supporters.
What is the matter?
The case pertains to an FIR registered in September 2025, in which a woman alleged that she had become acquainted with MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra via Facebook during the years 2013–14. The woman claimed that Pathanmajra, falsely representing himself as a divorcee, promised to marry her and, on this pretext, engaged in sexual relations with her.
Subsequently, an Anand Karaj ceremony was also solemnized at a Gurdwara on August 14, 2021; however, she later discovered that the MLA’s marriage to his first wife was still legally subsisting. The woman alleged that she had been sexually exploited under false pretenses.
Claim: Case Motivated by Political Malice
Representing the MLA, a senior counsel submitted to the court that the case was motivated by political malice. The defense further argued that the complainant had previously lodged a rape case against a police officer, leveling similar allegations, in which the accused was subsequently acquitted. Furthermore, a preliminary police investigation into the complaint had failed to uncover any clear evidence of a cognizable offense.
Opposing the bail plea on behalf of the State Government and the complainant, it was argued that the MLA had exploited the woman under false pretexts and subsequently subjected her to intimidation. It was further pointed out that, at one juncture, he had fled the country and gone abroad, and had even been declared a fugitive. Consequently, the apprehension that he might abscond remains a valid concern.
