Punjab AAP MP Demands BJP Apology Over Sikh Sentiments

In a sharp political intervention, Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has demanded an unconditional apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the central government’s naming of “Veer Bal Diwas” has hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. Seechewal wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging that the day be renamed to “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas” in recognition of Sikh traditions and sentiments.

Controversy Over Veer Bal Diwas Name

The controversy stems from the national observance of “Veer Bal Diwas”, instituted in 2022 to honour the martyrdom of the four Sahibzade (sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji). Some Sikh organizations and leaders argue that the current name does not reflect the spiritual gravity and reverence associated with their sacrifice. Seechewal, echoing these concerns, said that many in the Sikh community feel the nomenclature fails to properly honour the young martyrs’ legacy.

Protest Outside Parliament Highlights Sentiment

During the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, Seechewal staged a protest at the main gate of the Parliament holding placards while reiterating his demand for renaming the observance, asserting that Sikh sentiments were overlooked in the official naming. He cited a letter from Akal Takht Sahib, which emphasized the need for a nomenclature that aligns with Sikh ethos.

Political Tensions Between AAP and BJP

The move has accentuated political tensions between the Punjab AAP leadership and the BJP, with Seechewal and other AAP representatives insisting that the central government respect and better reflect Sikh cultural and religious heritage in national observances. The BJP has not directly responded to the specific demand for an apology or renaming as of now. Reporting on the broader debate also shows ongoing discussion among Sikh MPs on the issue.
