Punjab Approves ₹1.61 Crore Study to Tackle Water Crisis

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has given in-principle approval for a ₹1.61 crore micro-level study to address the state’s growing water challenges. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the study will be carried out by the Punjab State Farmers’ and Farm Workers’ Commission in collaboration with IIT Ropar to better understand water resources and seepage patterns.

Advanced Science to Map Water Resources
The study will use modern scientific methods such as carbon dating, isotope analysis, heliborne surveys and aquifer profiling to assess sub-soil and surface water. Its aim is to develop sustainable solutions for managing groundwater levels and exploring alternative water sources across Punjab.

Funding, Scope and Timeline
The total project cost is ₹221.65 lakh, with IIT Ropar contributing ₹60 lakh and the remaining ₹161 lakh funded by the state commission. The research will be completed in five phases within 12 months and will provide technical support, field studies, laboratory analysis and capacity building for long-term water management.
