Chandigarh: Amidst preparations for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued directives regarding the transfers and postings of officers. According to the directives, officers who have completed three years in a district during the last four years or who will complete three years by the prescribed cut-off date of March 31, 2027, will be removed from the district. These directives extend to officers from the rank of Sub-Inspector (SI) to senior officers in the police department. These rules will also apply to officers involved in election security and deployment of police forces. Sub-Inspectors will not be posted to their home districts.

District Election Officers (DEOs), Returning Officers (ROs), Assistant Returning Officers (AROs), Police Inspectors, and officers of the rank of SI or above will not be re-deployed to the Assembly constituency or district where they were posted during the last Assembly election or subsequent by-election.

Announcement made 24 days after the Election Commission’s visit in 2022

Following the Election Commission’s visit to Punjab, discussions have intensified regarding the announcement of the assembly elections. However, the official election dates will be announced by the Commission.

It is expected that if the election schedule proceeds as scheduled, the election dates could be announced after mid-December, and voting could be held in February. At present, this is only a tentative timeline, not an official schedule.

Regarding the chronology of the previous assembly elections in 2022, the Election Commission team visited Punjab on December 15 and 16, 2021. Twenty-four days later, on January 8, 2022, assembly elections were announced. Voting for that election took place on February 20, while the votes were counted on March 10.

The current term of the Punjab Legislative Assembly runs until March 2027. Therefore, it will be necessary to complete the entire election process before the term ends.
