Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Tuesday presented the progress report card of the education sector during the four and a half years of the Punjab government’s tenure. He said that today Punjab has become a leader in school education in the entire country. Punjab has even surpassed Kerala. This is not just our statement, but also the NITI Aayog report for 2026-27. We are at the top position in the country. Now children are enrolling in government schools. Since 2022, 3.64 lakh students have moved from private schools to government schools. We have opened Schools of Eminence and kept merit schools alive. He said that when the Aam Aadmi Party took power in Punjab in 2022, the state’s education system was very poor. Many schools were located in the open and did not even have toilets. Each teacher was teaching five classes. We took the initiative to change this environment. Bains said that almost all schools have been walled and around 5,000 new toilets have been built. 9,000 new classrooms have been constructed. 10,000 smart panels have been installed. Smart panels mean that normal writing can be done there and films can also be played on them. The Education Minister said that we have developed 5,012 modern laboratories. 2,300 crore rupees have been spent on this. When we came to power, 400,000 children were studying sitting on the floor, 500 schools did not have drinking water facilities, and textbooks were reaching children 4-5 months late after the start of the session. Now, not a single child studies sitting on the floor. Every school has functional toilets. 200,000 desks have been installed to prevent children from sitting on the floor. All government schools have been connected with WiFi. Swimming pools, shooting ranges, basketball courts, tennis courts, kabaddi mats, wrestling and boxing rings are being built in these schools. Ex-servicemen have been appointed as campus managers in secondary schools. Two security guards have been deployed in schools with more than 500 students. Results have been excellent. In four years, 786 students have passed the JEE and 2,166 students have passed the NEET exams in the state. A large number of these are from government schools. We are ahead on every front. Punjab is the first state to use artificial intelligence in courses. It has undoubtedly changed the face of school education in Punjab.
