Punjab: Chain Snatching Case Filed Against Akali Worker; Uproar at Police Station

A controversy erupted on Sunday in Majitha, Amritsar, following allegations that an Akali worker detained by the police was held in the SHO’s official quarters rather than at the police station. Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia arrived at the police station with his supporters and subsequently staged a sit-in protest, raising slogans against the police.

According to reports, the police had detained Akali worker Jobanpreet Singh on Sunday morning in connection with a chain-snatching case. The Akali Dal alleges that instead of bringing him to the police station, he was confined in a room within the official quarters of SHO Naresh Kumar, with a police constable stationed outside. Majithia claimed that upon failing to locate the worker at the police station, he questioned the police personnel present. This led to a heated argument over the phone between him and the SHO. Subsequently, he proceeded to the official quarters with his supporters and secured Jobanpreet Singh’s release.

Majithia alleged that the police are acting under political pressure and are attempting to falsely implicate an innocent youth in the murder case of ASI Joga Singh, with the intention of staging a fake encounter. The police, however, have refuted these allegations. The police maintain that Jobanpreet Singh was detained not in connection with the ASI murder case, but for questioning and legal action regarding an altercation and chain-snatching incident that occurred on the day of the municipal body elections. The allegations regarding a fake encounter have also been termed baseless.

Following the incident, an atmosphere of tension prevailed in the area. A heavy police force was deployed to the scene. Members of the Kirti Kisan Union also arrived at the location and raised slogans against the police. As of now, both the police and the Akali Dal remain firm on their respective claims regarding the matter.
