Cold Wave and Dense Fog Grip Punjab and Chandigarh, Orange Alert Issued Till January 6

Chandigarh: A cold wave and fog will now impact Punjab and Chandigarh simultaneously. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for cold wave and fog until January 6th. Dense fog is expected in all districts today (Sunday), while a cold wave warning has been issued for 10 districts.

Faridkot Coldest, Zero Visibility Recorded in Amritsar

The maximum temperature recorded a slight increase of 0.8 degrees Celsius, but remained 3.2 degrees below normal. Faridkot was the coldest district with a minimum temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius. Visibility was zero meters in Amritsar and 30 meters in Faridkot.

Cold winds will create cold wave conditions

According to the Meteorological Department, no major changes are expected in Punjab’s weather. A western disturbance that had been lingering in the Himalayan region has moved on, while another has reached the Himalayan region from Pakistan. This western disturbance is located high in the Himalayas, so it will not affect Punjab’s weather.

Cold winds have begun blowing from the mountains, which will further lower temperatures in Punjab and maintain cold wave conditions. This will improve air quality. Recent rains have brought clear weather.

List of Districts Under Cold Wave Warning

Dense fog will occur in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali) and Malerkotla. Cold wave conditions will prevail in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga and Bathinda. The weather will remain dry.

Night Temperatures to Drop Further, IMD Warns

Maximum temperatures in Punjab and Chandigarh ranged from 11 degrees to 18 degrees Celsius. Amritsar recorded the lowest maximum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, followed by Chandigarh at 14.4 degrees Celsius and Bathinda at 18.8 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures ranged from 5.5 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the cold will intensify at night in these districts.
