IMD Warns of Rain, Lightning in Punjab and Chandigarh

Chandigarh: Light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places in Chandigarh and all districts of Punjab today (Tuesday). The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for a cold wave, thunderstorms, the possibility of lightning, and strong winds of up to 40 to 50 km per hour.

The maximum temperature recorded in the last 24 hours has brought the temperature closer to normal. The highest temperature of 23.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Faridkot, while the lowest temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in Bathinda.

Districts Likely to See Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

Thunderstorms accompanied by strong lightning are likely at isolated places over Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, Mohali (SAS Nagar), and Malerkotla districts. Wind speeds may reach 40-50 km/h.

Western Disturbance Active Over North India

A western disturbance is currently active in the upper atmosphere. The resulting cyclonic system was initially over southern Punjab, but has now reached Haryana and surrounding areas. This system is active at an altitude of approximately 1.5 to 3 kilometers above the ground. This weather system now extends from Haryana to southwest Rajasthan. At the same time, very strong winds are blowing over northern India. According to the Meteorological Department, these winds are reaching speeds of up to 125 knots.

Apart from this, another new western disturbance is likely to become active in North-West India from the night of January 30, 2026, due to which a change in the weather may be seen again.

Temperature Likely to Fluctuate in Coming Days

Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, said that light to moderate rain is expected at many places in the state on the 27th. Light to moderate rain is also possible at some places on January 28th, 31st, and February 1st. The minimum temperature is expected to rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next two days. After this, the temperature is expected to fall by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next two days. After this, the temperature may rise again by 3 to 5 degrees.

January 29: Cold wave conditions are likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, and Mansa. The weather is likely to remain dry.

January 30: Cold wave conditions are likely at isolated places over Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, and Mansa. The weather is likely to remain dry.
