Light to Moderate Rain Expected in Punjab and Chandigarh; Thunderstorm Alert in 14 Districts

Chandigarh: The weather has changed in Punjab and Chandigarh. On February 1, light to moderate rain is likely in all districts. According to the Meteorological Department, this spell of rain may continue until February 3. The department has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 14 districts. During this period, winds may blow at a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour.

Over the past 24 hours, the maximum daytime temperature has dropped by 1.8 degrees Celsius, bringing it below normal. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 3.8°C in Faridkot (Punjab). In the next 24 hours, night temperatures may rise by 3 to 5 degrees, while day temperatures may fall by 2 to 4 degrees.

Rain likely in 14 districts

According to the Meteorological Department, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Mohali are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning. Wind speeds during this time may remain between 30 and 40 km per hour.

Meanwhile, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, and Rupnagar may receive light to moderate rain at many places. Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, and Mohali may receive rain at a few places.
Whereas Firozpur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, and Mansa may see rainfall at isolated locations.

Visibility dropped below 40 meters at many places

The Meteorological Department stated that from the night of February 2, 2026, a new western disturbance may affect northwest India. After that, another western disturbance is likely to become active from the night of February 3, 2026. According to the department, a western disturbance present in the upper levels over northeastern Iran is still active and continues to influence the weather. Additionally, high-speed jet stream winds are blowing over northern India.

During this period, cold wave conditions were recorded in Patiala and Amritsar. In some areas, visibility dropped below 40 meters.

Expectation of light to moderate rainfall

Meteorological Department Director Surinder Pal said that on February 1, light to moderate rainfall may occur at some places in the state, while on January 31 and February 2, light rain is expected at isolated locations. Over the next 24 hours, night temperatures may rise by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.
