A biting cold snap has gripped Punjab, plunging temperatures well below the seasonal average and prompting weather warnings. Many districts are now contending with the double whammy of frigid air and dense fog, coupled with brisk winds, all of which are making everyday activities a challenge.

Ludhiana Breaks 50-Year Record

Ludhiana has emerged as one of the worst-hit cities, reportedly breaking a decades-old temperature record. The city has seen unusually low daytime temperatures, with previous reports noting readings as low as 11.2°C its coldest day in two years.

The prolonged cold, combined with fog and lack of sunlight, has intensified discomfort for residents.

Chandigarh Records Coldest Spell in Two Years

Chandigarh has recorded its coldest conditions in nearly two years, with temperatures plunging sharply below seasonal averages. In earlier cold spells this season, the city had already witnessed extreme lows nearing record levels, including temperatures around 2.8°C among the coldest in recent years.

The current dip further highlights the severity of the ongoing cold wave.

Temperatures Fall Below Normal Across Region

Across Punjab, temperatures are consistently running several degrees below normal. Many cities have recorded minimum temperatures between 5°C and 9°C, with some areas dipping even lower during peak cold wave conditions.

Cold winds and cloudy skies are preventing daytime warming, extending the chill.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts warning of:
