Punjab Congress Holds Crucial High-Level Meeting in Delhi Amid Leadership Speculation

New Delhi: The Punjab unit of the Indian National Congress is set to hold a key meeting with the party high command in Delhi on June 2, marking the second high-level discussion within four days. The meeting will be attended by senior party leaders, including Punjab in-charge and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

The meeting comes at a time when speculation over the Punjab Congress leadership has intensified, particularly regarding the post of state party president.

Congress Dismisses Rumors of Immediate Leadership Change

Despite growing political chatter, party leaders have denied reports of an imminent leadership reshuffle. According to Congress officials, the primary agenda of the meeting is to strengthen the organization and formulate strategies for upcoming elections.

Party leaders have maintained that the focus remains on preparing for future electoral battles rather than discussing changes in the state leadership structure.

Previous Meeting Triggered Political Speculation

On May 29, five senior Punjab Congress leaders were summoned to Delhi for a separate meeting with the high command. Political speculation emerged after Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, left the meeting approximately 15 minutes after it began.

The development fueled rumors of internal disagreements within the party. However, party leaders later clarified that there was no dispute. According to Bhupesh Baghel, Bajwa had presented his views during the meeting and left due to a pre-scheduled commitment.

Bajwa himself later stated that the incident had been misrepresented in sections of the media.

Punjab Congress Chief’s Position Remains Key Discussion Point

Although the party’s official stance remains unchanged, discussions about the future leadership of Punjab Congress continue within political circles.

Sources suggest that former minister Vijay Inder Singla has emerged as a prominent name in leadership discussions. He is reportedly viewed as a consensus-builder capable of working across different factions within the party.

Other names being discussed include Pargat Singh and Rana Gurjeet Singh.

Charanjit Singh Channi Seen as Influential Power Broker

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is not officially considered a contender for the state party chief’s position. However, party insiders continue to view him as an influential figure who could play a significant role in shaping leadership decisions.

His support is considered important in maintaining balance among various factions within the Punjab Congress.

High Command Prioritizes Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Congress leadership’s primary challenge remains ending factionalism and ensuring organizational unity in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Party leaders have repeatedly emphasized that the next Assembly election will be fought under a collective leadership model. Following a meeting on January 22, Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal reportedly warned leaders against making public statements on internal party matters.

Rahul Gandhi Calls for Teamwork

During a rally in Barnala on February 28, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged Punjab leaders to function as a united team.

Addressing party workers and leaders, Gandhi emphasized that no individual leader—regardless of stature—could win elections alone. He stressed that MPs, MLAs, and former chief ministers must work collectively if the party hopes to regain strength in Punjab.

Focus Remains on Strengthening Organization

While leadership-related speculation continues, Congress leaders insist that the current discussions are centered on organizational restructuring, electoral preparedness, and strengthening the party’s grassroots network.
