Punjab Congress Targets Mann Govt Over FBI-Linked Allegations Against Police Inspector, Seeks Thorough Probe

Chandigarh: The political row in Punjab intensified on Wednesday after the Congress accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to maintain law and order following reports that a Punjab Police inspector had been named in an alleged extortion-related investigation by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The Punjab Congress demanded a comprehensive probe into the allegations, saying merely transferring the officer was not sufficient.

The controversy centres on Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, who was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur district. Following widespread media reports and social media posts claiming that he had been named in an FBI investigation reportedly conducted under “Operation Hardball,” Punjab Police transferred him to the Police Lines in Hoshiarpur pending verification of the facts.

Punjab Police Orders Transfer Pending Verification

In an official statement, the Office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Jalandhar Range, said the department had taken cognisance of media reports and online posts referring to the alleged FBI investigation.

    The statement clarified that:

    • Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra has been shifted from Tanda Police Station to Police Lines, Hoshiarpur, with immediate effect.
    • The transfer has been made pending verification of the facts surrounding the allegations.
    • The police have not confirmed the authenticity of the claims regarding the alleged FBI investigation.

As of now, Punjab Police has not officially confirmed that the officer has been charged or indicted by the FBI.

    What Are the Allegations?

According to reports circulating on social media and cited by opposition leaders, the alleged FBI investigation relates to an extortion case in which the officer is accused of having links with organised criminal elements.

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi alleged that the officer had been named by the FBI for allegedly collaborating with gangsters involved in extortion, issuing threats and manipulating police cases.

Channi also claimed the alleged case involved an extortion demand of β‚Ή4 crore and alleged links with gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. However, these allegations have not been independently verified by Punjab Police or officially confirmed by the FBI.

    Channi Questions Bhagwant Mann Government

Addressing reporters, Channi criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging that the state’s law-and-order situation had deteriorated.

He questioned whether transferring the officer to Police Lines was an adequate response and demanded a full investigation into the allegations instead of what he described as a routine administrative transfer.

Channi also accused the state government of failing to curb gangsterism, organised crime and the drug menace in Punjab, while alleging that democracy was being undermined during the ongoing municipal elections.

    Congress Raises Municipal Election Allegations

Channi further alleged that Congress candidates had secured victories in places including Chamkaur Sahib, Morinda and Kapurthala, but were allegedly denied municipal leadership positions.

He claimed the election process was being manipulated, describing it as an attack on democratic institutions. The Punjab government has not officially responded to these specific allegations.

    Raja Warring Demands Clarification

Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also criticised the state government, saying the reported allegations against a Punjab Police officer warranted a detailed explanation from both the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police (DGP).

He argued that simply transferring the officer to Police Lines did not amount to disciplinary action and called for an inquiry, suspension or other appropriate measures if the allegations were found to be true.

    No Official Confirmation From FBI

At present, there has been no public confirmation from the FBI regarding the reported investigation or allegations against the Punjab Police officer.

Similarly, Punjab Police has stated only that the transfer was made while the matter is being verified. No criminal charges have been announced by Indian authorities against the officer in connection with the reported allegations.

The matter is expected to remain under close political and administrative scrutiny as further details emerge.
