Chandigarh, April 6: The sudden change in the weather which caused unseasonal rain, hailstorms and strong winds have caused major damage to crops across Punjab, especially in the Malwa region. Wheat crops, which were almost ready for harvest have been badly affected with reports suggesting significant losses in many districts.
Government Orders Crop Survey (Girdawari)
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that a special crop survey will be conducted by ‘Girdawari’ to measure the extent of the total damage. The survey will help the government to calculate all the losses and provide compensation for the damage to the affected farmers. Officials have been directed to carry out the process quickly so that relief can reach to the farmers as soon as possible.
Compensation for Farmers Expected
The state government has assured that the farmers who suffered losses due to an unexpected change in weather will receive compensation based on the survey conducted. Crop loss in some areas is reported to be very serious, raising concerns and tension among farmers about financial stress and delayed in harvesting.
