Punjab: Demand to cancel membership of MLA Lalpura, HC seeks response from govt

A public interest litigation has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking the revocation of the Assembly membership of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura from Khadoor Sahib. The petition was filed by Jaswant Singh of Tarn Taran. Hearing the petition, the High Court issued notices to MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura, the Punjab government, and others, seeking their responses.

The petition states that in 2013, a Tarn Taran court convicted MLA Lalpura in a case registered under the SC/ST Act for assaulting a woman. In September last year, the court sentenced the accused to four years in prison.

Under Supreme Court orders, Lalpura’s Assembly membership should have been revoked immediately after the sentencing, but despite this, his membership has not been revoked to date. A petition has been filed in the High Court seeking the revocation of Lalpura’s Assembly membership.

The petitioner alleges that the High Court has not yet stayed the sentence imposed on Lalpura, thus clearly violating Supreme Court orders. In this situation, the petitioner has now filed a petition in the High Court seeking the immediate cancellation of Lalpura’s Assembly membership. On Monday, the High Court issued a notice to the Punjab government, Lalpura, and others on the petition, seeking a response by March 30.

Punishment in this case
On March 4, 2013, a Scheduled Caste girl from Usman village in Tarn Taran, along with her father, a former soldier, and other family members, arrived at the Punjab International Palace on the Sri Goindwal Bypass. There, some taxi drivers molested the girl. When she protested, the accused assaulted her. The City Police Station team that arrived at the scene also assaulted the victim and her family. A photographer recorded the entire incident, and the next day, the victim’s family took the video to the City Police Station in Tarn Taran.
