Cold Wave Grip Punjab; Orange Alert Issued for Several Districts

Chandigarh: The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog alert for most districts in Punjab. Strong winds will continue to blow in many districts today, but no significant weather changes are expected. The western disturbance, which existed as a low-pressure area over Jammu and adjoining Pakistan, is now manifesting as a cyclonic circulation at an altitude of 3.1 to 7.6 kilometers above sea level.

An induced cyclonic circulation lies over North Punjab and adjoining areas at 1.5 km above mean sea level. The trough extending from the cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area over Jammu and adjoining Pakistan to the northeast Arabian Sea has now become less distinct.

Alert issued for many districts

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions for Sunday. During this period, dense fog is likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Mohali. Dense to very dense fog is also likely at isolated places in Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala.

Dense to very dense fog/cold wave conditions are likely at isolated places over Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala and Jalandhar. Dense fog/cold wave conditions are likely at isolated places over Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda and Mansa.

The minimum temperature dropped below one degree

According to the data released by the Meteorological Department, due to snowfall in the mountains, the temperature in the plains has also dropped significantly. The lowest minimum temperature of 0.8 degrees was recorded in Bathinda, Punjab. Apart from this, the maximum temperature was 17.2 in Faridkot. Today, the average maximum temperature in the state has increased by 0.2°C compared to yesterday. However, it still remains 3.6°C below normal.
