Punjab Drug Crisis: Home Minister Amit Shah Seeks Reports on Parvinder Singh Jhota, Bikramjit Singh Murder and Gulzar Singh’s Suicide Case

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought detailed reports from the Punjab government on three separate incidents involving the killing of anti-drug activist Parwinder Singh, popularly known as Jhota, a deadly attack in Gurdaspur and the reported suicide of Gulzar Singh amid allegations concerning the availability of synthetic drugs and harassment.

In separate communications addressed to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, the Ministry flagged concerns over the potential law and order implications of these incidents and sought comprehensive details from the state government. Copies of the communications were also forwarded to the Director General of Police, Punjab.

MHA Seeks Report on Jhota’s Killing, Drug Control MeasuresThe Ministry sought a comprehensive factual report on the killing of Parwinder Singh, popularly known as Jhota, in Mansa on October 13, 2026. Jhota was reportedly known for campaigning against the rampant sale and abuse of narcotic and psychotropic drugs in Punjab.

The communication noted that protests had taken place in the state following his killing and asked the government to provide details of the incident and the steps taken in the case.

The MHA also sought information on the implementation of the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026-2029), which Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared with the Punjab Chief Minister on August 10, 2026.

The document outlines measures aimed at achieving the national objective of a drug-free India, including setting up or restructuring a dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), mandatory financial investigations, outcome-oriented Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) reviews, strengthening prosecution and NDPS courts, designating nodal officers and taking action against transnational drug networks.

Report Sought on Gurdaspur Attack That Killed Bikramjit SinghIn another communication dated October 16, the Ministry sought a detailed report on the attack on Bikramjit Singh and two others, Nishan Singh and Gurmukh Singh, in Mari Panwan village under Sri Hargobindpur police station in Batala tehsil of Gurdaspur district.

Bikramjit Singh died in the incident, while the other two sustained critical injuries.

The Ministry referred to allegations that the attack was linked to narcotic drugs and asked the Punjab government to submit a detailed report in view of the potential law and order ramifications of the incident.

MHA Seeks Details on Gulzar Singh’s Suicide, Synthetic Drug AllegationsThe Ministry has also sought a detailed report on the reported suicide of Gulzar Singh on September 8, 2026, amid allegations concerning the availability of synthetic drugs in his area.

According to reports cited in the communication, Gulzar Singh was the father of a youth struggling with substance dependence and had allegedly questioned the availability of synthetic drugs before his death. He was also reported to have raised allegations against a minister in the Punjab government.

The communication further referred to allegations that Gulzar Singh had faced systematic harassment and pressure from the local village panchayat, which reportedly drove him to take his own life. These allegations have not been independently established in the communication.

Citing public distress and the potential law and order implications, the Ministry asked the state government to provide a detailed account of the incident.

Punjab Govt Asked to Detail Action on Drug MenaceAcross the communications, the MHA has sought factual reports on the incidents and details of the action taken by the Punjab government. The requests come amid concerns raised in the communications over alleged drug-related violence, the availability of synthetic drugs and the wider law and order situation in the state.

The Ministry’s communications were issued with the approval of the competent authority.
