Punjab Emerges as India’s Top State in School Education, Government Schools Undergo Remarkable Transformation

Punjab, once considered among the lagging states in the field of education, has emerged as a national model by securing the top position in school education across India. A few years ago, the state’s education system faced criticism over the condition of government schools, inadequate infrastructure, and declining performance in national rankings. Punjab ranked 22nd in 2016–17 and slipped further to 27th place by 2020. However, through sustained reforms and strategic investments, the state has now achieved a historic turnaround.

According to the NITI Aayog Education Quality Report 2026, Punjab has secured the first position in school education, outperforming states such as Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi. The achievement is being viewed as a major success story in educational transformation and governance.

Significant Improvement in Learning Outcomes

The report highlights substantial gains in student learning levels, particularly in primary education. In Grade 3 language proficiency, Punjab’s students achieved an 82% competency rate, compared to Kerala’s 75%. In mathematics, Punjab recorded 78% proficiency, while Kerala stood at 70%.

Punjab also performed strongly at the secondary level. In Grade 9 mathematics assessments, students from Punjab scored 52%, surpassing Kerala’s 45%. These results indicate a strong focus on strengthening foundational learning across the state.

Modern Infrastructure in Government Schools

Punjab’s government schools have witnessed major improvements in infrastructure and digital facilities. Nearly all government schools now have access to electricity, while 99% are equipped with functional computers. More than 80% of schools have been upgraded with smart classrooms.

The state’s smart classroom coverage stands at 80.1%, significantly higher than neighboring Haryana’s 50.3%. Punjab also leads in internet connectivity, with 88.9% of schools connected, compared to Haryana’s 78.9%.

Focus on Teacher Training

To strengthen the quality of education, the Punjab government has placed special emphasis on teacher development. Several teachers have been sent to countries such as Finland and Singapore for advanced training. The initiative aims to introduce globally recognized teaching methods and modern classroom practices into Punjab’s education system.

Success in Competitive Examinations

Students from government schools have also demonstrated improved performance in national-level competitive examinations. According to available data, 786 students qualified the JEE Main examination, while 1,284 students successfully cleared NEET.

These achievements highlight that students from government schools can excel at the highest levels when provided with adequate resources, guidance, and opportunities.

Recruitment Drive and New Initiatives

The state government has recruited more than 13,000 teachers and support staff to strengthen the education system. Additionally, an English Edge Programme has been launched for nearly 300,000 students to improve English language proficiency.

Punjab has also established 118 Schools of Eminence, equipped with modern technology, advanced laboratories, and enhanced learning facilities to provide students with high-quality education.

Growing Public Confidence in Government Schools

The positive changes in the education system are increasingly visible across society. A growing number of parents are choosing government schools for their children, and public confidence has risen significantly, particularly in rural areas.

Education experts believe that improved infrastructure, technology integration, well-trained teachers, and education-focused policies have played a crucial role in Punjab’s transformation.

Punjab’s rise from a lower-ranked state to the national leader in school education demonstrates what can be achieved when education is prioritized and reforms are implemented effectively. Today, government schools in Punjab are no longer seen merely as centers of learning; they have become symbols of modern education, innovation, and hope for a brighter future.
