Punjab Expands ‘Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana’: 17 More Treatment Now Available Cashless at Private Hospitals

In a major step towards improving healthcare accessibility and reducing the burden on government hospitals, the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has approved cashless treatment for 17 additional medical procedures at empanelled private hospitals under the ‘Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana’.

The expansion is aimed at making healthcare services more accessible, efficient, and patient-friendly across the state. In another significant move, the government has also extended the scheme’s benefits to individuals living alone, including senior citizens, widows, and others residing independently.

Previously, these 17 medical procedures could only be performed in government hospitals. By allowing empanelled private hospitals to offer these treatments, the government hopes to reduce overcrowding, shorten waiting times, and provide patients with quicker access to quality healthcare closer to their homes.

Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the decision would strengthen healthcare delivery, especially in districts where specialized medical facilities are limited. “This initiative will ease the pressure on major government hospitals, reduce patient waiting periods, and ensure timely treatment,” he said.

Wide Range of Procedures Added

The newly approved procedures cover multiple medical specialties.

In the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) category, treatments such as nasal bone fracture reduction and adenoidectomy will now be available at empanelled private hospitals. These procedures are particularly important for children and accident victims requiring prompt medical intervention.

The largest expansion has been made in the field of general surgery. Procedures including hydrocele surgery, abscess treatment, appendectomy, and both open and laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries have been added to the scheme’s cashless treatment package at private hospitals.

Boost to Women’s Healthcare

The government has also prioritized women’s health by including several critical gynecological procedures under the expanded scheme. These include termination of pregnancies beyond 12 weeks, hysterotomy, treatment for pregnancy-related complications requiring hospitalization, and examinations under anesthesia for minor girls, unmarried sexually inactive women, and survivors of sexual assault.

Officials said the inclusion of these services would improve access to timely and specialized healthcare for vulnerable sections of society.

Enhanced Eye and Orthopedic Care

Under the revised package, ophthalmology services such as pterygium excision and entropion correction can now be availed at empanelled private hospitals. Orthopedic patients will also benefit from procedures including tendon release surgeries, treatment of small joint injuries, and ankle fracture repairs.The package rates for the newly included procedures have been fixed between ₹2,000 and ₹27,800.

Scheme Extended to Individuals Living Alone

In a notable policy change, the Punjab Government has expanded eligibility criteria to include individuals living alone. Until now, the scheme primarily covered families with two or more members.

The revised guidelines will also benefit parents whose children are settled abroad. Applicants must provide a Punjab Aadhaar Card and Voter ID Card, while those below 18 years of age must submit a birth certificate. Individuals living alone will be required to furnish a self-declaration form, which will be verified by local elected representatives.

Over 65 Lakh Families Covered

According to the State Health Agency, nearly 65 lakh families are currently covered under the Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojna’. At present, 824 hospitals, including government, central government, and empanelled private healthcare institutions, are providing treatment under the program.

The scheme now covers approximately 2,300 diseases and medical procedures, making it one of Punjab’s most comprehensive health insurance initiatives. With the latest expansion, the government aims to further strengthen the healthcare safety net and ensure that a larger number of residents can access quality cashless medical treatment across the state.
