Punjab Farmers Protest Power Crisis, Hold Dharna at Powercom Offices

The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha today staged a massive protest across the state against the power crisis in Punjab. Under the leadership of the organization, strong demonstrations were held against the government by picketing outside the offices of Powercom officials at 31 places in 17 districts. Farmer leaders allege that the state government had promised uninterrupted power supply during the elections, but at present many areas of Punjab are facing long power cuts.

They say that farmers are facing a lot of problems due to lack of electricity both during the day and night. Especially the paddy crop is being directly affected and due to lack of timely irrigation, the possibility of crop damage has increased.

Electric motors get at least 16 hours of supply daily

The protesting farmers have demanded that electric motors running for agriculture should be provided continuous power for at least 16 hours daily. At the same time, uninterrupted power supply to domestic consumers should be ensured for 24 hours, so that the common people can also get relief.

Concerns raised over privatisation of electricity board

Apart from this, the farmer leaders alleged that the government is moving in the direction of privatization of the electricity board, which is being opposed by the farmers and employee unions. He says that a large number of employees in Powercom have retired, but new recruits are not being recruited in their place.

The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha has demanded that the government should fill up the vacant posts in Powercom at the earliest, provide adequate power to farmers and common consumers and take immediate effective steps to find a permanent solution to the power crisis.
