Farmers to Protest in 17 Punjab Districts Tomorrow, Effigies of Centre and State Governments to Be Burnt Over Land Acquisition and Urea Shortage

Amritsar: Farmer organizations in Punjab have prepared for large-scale protests and effigy-burning events against the central and state governments on June 8.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the decision to hold nationwide protests against the government was taken during a meeting of the All India Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) in Gwalior.

According to Pandher, these protests will be held in several states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Punjab. He claimed that reports of effigy-burning events have already been received from approximately 17 districts in Punjab alone.

Acute shortage of urea fertilizer is the biggest issue

Highlighting the farmers’ main grievances, Pandher stated that the most significant problem is the severe shortage of urea fertilizer. In many places, shopkeepers and companies are forcibly foisting additional products such as pesticides and other fertilizers upon farmers alongside urea. He also alleged that large-scale black marketing of urea is taking place in several regions.

Fertilizer availability also affected by supply chain disruptions

Pandher added that the fertilizer shortage in the country is not merely a local issue but a serious national-level crisis. According to him, fertilizer availability has been impacted by international conditions and supply chain disruptions, causing immense hardship for farmers.

Farmers distressed by rising diesel prices

Furthermore, Pandher described the rising diesel prices as detrimental to farmers. He pointed out that despite a drop in crude oil prices in the international market, domestic petrol and diesel prices are not being reduced, leading to a continuous rise in inflation.

The farmer leader also targeted the government over the issue of land acquisition. He alleged that farmers’ lands are being forcibly acquired in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana under the guise of various schemes, including the Bharatmala Project.

Call for massive participation in the June 8 protest

Pandher also referred to the India-US trade agreement and recent political decisions, terming them contrary to the interests of farmers. Pandher concluded by stating that if the governments do not resolve these issues, farmers and laborers will intensify their agitation. He appealed to all farmers to participate in large numbers in the protest scheduled for tomorrow, June 8.
