Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has accused the central government of not releasing the token amount of ₹1,600 crore announced for flood victims. He said the Prime Minister had announced this amount, but it has not been sent to the state yet. “Your cameras should have pictures. They will come, walk around the flood-affected areas in their pyjamas, and say they will talk to us. I don’t know what was said there. They announced ₹1,600 crore as a token amount. Prime Minister, please give it to us; we will take care of the rest later,” Chief Minister Mann said at the inauguration ceremony of a sugar mill. Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu refuted CM Mann’s allegations and said that the cheques being distributed to flood victims by the state government are from the funds released by the central government. Bittu said, “CM Mann is raising questions about public money. He should clarify how many of the cheques being distributed are from the state and how many from the central government.”
Amount distributed for 36,703 houses
Bittu said that Union Minister Shivraj Chouhan handed over funds for 36,703 flood-affected houses to the Minister of State. With this, ₹1.20 lakh was provided for each house and ₹40,000 for a bathroom. The central government has already sent ₹587 crore to the state for this purpose.
Additional assistance under central schemes
Bitu also informed that the compensation for goats and cattle that Chief Minister Mann is referring to was also given from the funds released by the Centre. Apart from this, the Centre sent funds to farmers under seed and agriculture schemes, which made timely sowing possible.
CM should provide clarity
The Union Minister said that CM Mann should make it clear to the public how much money the Central Government is providing and how much the State Government is contributing from its share. He promised that all the data will be made public soon.
