Punjab floods: SAD to hold emergency meet tomorrow to discuss relief work

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has convened an emergency meeting on Monday in Chandigarh to review the escalating flood situation in Punjab and devise a strategy to assist affected communities.

The meeting, to be chaired by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal at the party headquarters, will assess losses across districts and determine a coordinated party response.

Party Leaders to Review Damage and Response Plans

Sharing details on X, senior SAD leader and former Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema said, “The Shiromani Akali Dal President S Sukhbir Singh Badal has convened an emergency meeting of District Presidents & All Assembly in-charge’s tomorrow at 2 p.m. at party headquarters in Chandigarh.”

He added, “The party will take feedback from party leaders on the losses suffered by people in different parts of Punjab & will finalise the strategy to help the affected persons in this hour of crisis.”

On-Ground Efforts to Be Intensified

Cheema noted that grassroots cadres were already active in flood-hit regions but emphasised that more needed to be done. “Already the party cadres are working hard on the ground, but keeping in view the magnitude of the problem, the party will further intensify the efforts after taking ground reports,” he said.

Massive Flood Damage Across Punjab

Punjab has been battling severe floods for weeks, with initial estimates suggesting losses exceeding ₹13,000 crore since August 17. The devastation has impacted homes, agriculture, and infrastructure in multiple districts, with assessments still underway.

Nearly 2,000 villages across all districts have been affected by heavy rainfall in Punjab and neighbouring hill states. Over 4 lakh people have been impacted, with 43 fatalities reported in 14 districts.

The agricultural sector has been hit particularly hard, with 1.72 lakh hectares of farmland damaged in 18 districts. Homes, infrastructure, and livestock have also suffered substantial losses.
