Punjab government to open Aam Aadmi Clinics in Central Jails

After the grand success of Aam Aadmi Clinics across the state, the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is now planning a pilot project to open Aam Aadmi Clinics in central jails. The decision has been taken to provide comprehensive and quality healthcare services including mental health care to the prisoners.

Sharing details about this new initiative, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said that apart from treating physical ailments, it is also very important to take care of the mental health of the prisoners.

Describing jails as ‘houses of reform’, Dr. Balbir Singh said that true justice means bringing about reformation in individuals. He said, “When a prisoner comes out of jail, he should be physically and mentally healthy. This overall reform is very important to realise Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s dream of ‘Rangla Punjab’.”

Dr. Balbir Singh said that psychologists and psychiatrists will be deployed in the Aam Aadmi Clinics in the jails to provide necessary counselling to the prisoners.

He said that in view of the success of the 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics already functioning in the state, they are now being expanded in the reform homes. It is worth mentioning that since their inception on August 15, 2022, these clinics have achieved a milestone by providing free treatment to more than 4.20 crore people and more than 2.29 crore diagnostic tests have been conducted here free of cost.

The Health Minister said that these clinics are ensuring quality health services for all by providing 107 types of medicines and 47 types of health screening tests, including special tests for pregnancy, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and dengue, free of cost.
