The impact of Punjab’s economic strength and improved financial management is clearly visible in the state’s revenue figures. Finance, Excise, and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced that a remarkable increase of 14.59 percent was recorded in the state’s total GST receipts during May 2026.
During this period, Punjab’s GST collection rose to ₹2,400.52 crore, an increase of ₹305.71 crore compared to the ₹2,094.81 crore collected in May 2025. The Punjab government attributes this growth to the expansion of economic activities, improved tax compliance, and effective financial management within the state.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema emphasized that this impressive rise is the result of sustained economic activity, better tax compliance, and the effective implementation of enforcement measures by the Excise and Taxation Department.
Elaborating in a press statement, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema noted that Punjab’s GST performance has been outstanding compared to national trends, far exceeding the growth rate seen in the country’s total GST revenue for the same month last year.
He stated, “While the growth in Punjab’s cash collection stood at 6.57 percent, the state’s total GST growth reached a high of 14.59 percent, reflecting a strengthening revenue base, improved tax compliance, and highly effective tax administration measures.”
Providing details on enforcement achievements, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “Across Punjab, the State Intelligence and Preventive Units (SIPU) delivered impressive results in May 2026 alone, imposing penalties worth ₹182.69 crore and recovering ₹178.76 crore.” He stated that this significant recovery was made possible through comprehensive data analytics, intelligence-based investigations, targeted verification drives, and field operations conducted with state-wide coordination.
Revealing a major breakthrough against tax evasion, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “The Punjab Taxation Department has successfully busted a fake billing racket worth ₹85.4 crore and arrested the director of a Ludhiana-based firm for fraudulently claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC) amounting to ₹15.56 crore through bogus transactions.
“He mentioned that the investigation revealed the use of non-existent firms, fake invoices, fabricated debit notes, and forged transportation records to commit the tax fraud. As part of this action, the firm’s director was arrested under the Punjab Goods and Services Tax Act, and approximately ₹3 crore has already been recovered from the beneficiaries linked to the fraud.
Concluding his press statement, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema reiterated that the Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is fully committed to safeguarding government revenue and ensuring a level playing field for honest taxpayers by utilizing advanced data analytics, close scrutiny of e-way bills, FASTag verification, and intelligence inputs.
The Finance Minister reaffirmed the Punjab Government’s strict ‘zero-tolerance’ policy against networks involved in fake billing and organized tax evasion, pledging that the Excise and Taxation Department would continue to protect the interests of genuine taxpayers through a balanced approach involving support, rigorous monitoring, and uncompromising enforcement.
