Punjab Govt’s Show of Strength

When seven out of the ten Rajya Sabha MPs belonging to Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) defected to the BJP, it was widely speculated that the party’s MLAs would also splinter, causing the party to crumble. Rumors began to circulate that a certain number of MLAs might follow specific MPs into the BJP fold; however, during a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly on May 1st, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party successfully demonstrated their political maturity. Political analysts were already aware that Bhagwant Mann maintains a firm grip on both his party and his government. This very fact was amply demonstrated during the Assembly session.

During the vote of confidence, 82 MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party unequivocally stood by the Mann government, and the motion of confidence was passed with ease.

Undoubtedly, this outcome has significantly bolstered the standing of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Punjab government. On May 5th, the Chief Minister, accompanied by his supporting MLAs, is scheduled to visit New Delhi to showcase his political strength and to call upon Her Excellency, the President of India. It is anticipated that the Mann government will utilize this meeting with the President to advocate for stringent legal measures against political defection or to demand the implementation of the ‘Right to Recall.’ Meanwhile, two bills were also approved during the Assembly session: the Punjab Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill and the Punjab Prisons and Correctional Services Bill, 2026.

Furthermore, on the occasion of Labour Day, the Punjab government unanimously passed a resolution in the Assembly—the first of its kind in 13 years—to increase the minimum wage by 15 percent. Terming this move as a tribute to the contributions of the working class, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the benefits of this wage hike would extend to all registered workers across both the government and private sectors. An interesting side note to these proceedings was that the Punjab BJP staged a protest by organizing a parallel Assembly session outside the main House to register their dissent.
